CONVERGENCE Q45The Convergence Q45 Mission

A question I was asked in July 2026

How I Learned to Hear God

A journey of attention, discernment, practice, testing, confirmation, and growing recognition.

A medical student asked me when I began hearing from God the way I do, and how I knew. It was an honest question, asked without spectacle, and it deserved an honest answer.

The answer reaches much farther back than the recent intensification of prophetic training. It reaches back to a girl in ninth grade who sensed what her life would be for, and to the long, unglamorous years of learning to tell the difference between what she wanted, what she feared, and what God was actually saying.

The long formation

A gift recognized slowly, over many years

The gift did not suddenly arrive in 2026. Recognition, language, practice, and stewardship became more intentional.

  1. Adolescence

The earliest clear spiritual direction I can name reaches back to adolescence. In ninth grade I sensed God showing me that I would become a doctor.

  2. Eleventh grade

I sensed a call toward becoming an international medical missionary. The sense was quiet, but it held.

  3. Middle school, college, and onward

Prophetic gifting and spiritual discernment were already emerging, and they later became more explicit through church settings, prayer, ministry, and learning communities.

  4. Roughly twenty five years

Awareness of and training in prophetic gifts continued across churches and states. Each period of growth deepened recognition while still leaving a great deal to learn.

  5. The Well years

An important formation season through You May All Prophesy, community discernment, pastoral guidance, and practical ministry among people.

  6. 2022

A spiritual gifts inventory ranked prophecy first, word of knowledge second, and leadership third. I hold that as one confirming data point, not as proof by itself.

  7. 2026

A more intentional season of prophetic formation accelerated through structured practice and training. I am learning to steward Nabi-like verbal flow and Seer-like visual impressions, words of knowledge, Scripture-linked impressions, inner promptings, and other forms of spiritual perception with greater discipline.

First person

What hearing has meant for me

The word hearing does not require an audible sound. I do not routinely hear an external audible voice. What I receive arrives in several forms, and part of formation is learning the forms.

  • An inner prompting or a phrase that comes to my spirit.
  • A picture or a vision held quietly rather than announced.
  • A Scripture that becomes unusually salient.
  • A word or phrase that leads me into Scripture.
  • A spontaneous song or a single line that comes to mind.
  • A word of knowledge, a specific awareness about a person.
  • A burden to pray, sometimes before I know why.
  • A pattern or convergence that becomes clearer across separate moments.
  • A deep inward sense that calls for prayerful weighing rather than announcement.

As a physician scientist trained in cardio-oncology, I am accustomed to describing what I observe with precision and to naming my uncertainty out loud. That discipline has served my spiritual life as well as my clinical one.

The heart of the matter

How did I know?

Certainty usually grows through multiple layers of discernment rather than one sensation. A strong feeling is a beginning, not a conclusion.

Layer 1

Receive

Capture the raw impression before interpretation edits it. The first words matter.

Layer 2

Scripture

Examine whether the impression coheres with the character and teaching of Scripture.

Layer 3

Character

Ask whether it reflects the character of God: truth, love, holiness, mercy, wisdom, courage, justice, humility.

Layer 4

Convergence

Notice independent repetition. Themes, Scriptures, conversations, circumstances, and later moments that align without being forced.

Layer 5

Confirmation

Allow mature believers, mentors, or the person receiving ministry to help weigh what was sensed.

Layer 6

Reality

Honor facts, context, professional knowledge, and ordinary explanations. Spiritual discernment should grow alongside careful observation.

Layer 7

Fruit

Observe what the impression produces over time: love, clarity, repentance, courage, peace, wise action, strengthening, encouragement, consolation, healthy responsibility.

Layer 8

Time

Revisit what was recorded. Some impressions become clearer through fulfillment, correction, refinement, or release.

I call something from the Lord with greater confidence as it survives testing.

In my own words

I have learned to preserve the difference between receiving an impression, interpreting it, and deciding what to do with it. Those are three separate acts, and collapsing them is where most harm begins.

Biblical foundation

Where this teaching stands

These passages are summarized briefly in my own words. Read them in your own translation, slowly, and let them examine what follows.

1 Samuel 3:1 to 10

A young servant hears a call he does not yet recognize, and needs a mentor to teach him how to answer. Recognition is learned.

John 10:27

Jesus describes his people as those who come to know his voice. Familiarity grows out of relationship rather than technique.

1 Corinthians 14:3 and 14:29

Prophetic speech exists to strengthen, encourage, and console, and what is spoken is to be weighed by others.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 to 21

Do not quench the Spirit and do not despise prophecy, but test everything and hold fast to what is good.

1 John 4:1

Not every impression or voice is from God. Testing is commanded, and it is an act of love rather than suspicion.

James 1:5

Wisdom is available to anyone who asks for it. Discernment begins with asking rather than assuming.

Galatians 5:22 to 23

The fruit of the Spirit gives a durable measure for what a word produces in a life over time.

Hebrews 5:14

Discernment is described as trained by constant practice. Maturity is formed, not downloaded.

Formation

Recognition became easier because I kept returning

Nothing here was earned by intensity. It grew because I came back, again and again, to the same ordinary practices.

  • Returning to prayer when nothing seemed to happen.
  • Returning to Scripture until its language shaped my own.
  • Returning to the journal, especially to entries that embarrassed me.
  • Practicing in low-risk settings where being wrong cost no one anything.
  • Serving actual people rather than cultivating an experience.
  • Receiving feedback, and accepting correction without defending myself.
  • Reviewing afterward: what happened, what did not, and what I had assumed.
  • Training in community, where recognition is sharpened and tempered together.

Current courses and communities sharpen vocabulary and discipline for capacities that have been developing for years. The training did not create the gift. It gave me better words for it, and better habits around it.

Interactive practice

Seven days of listening and discernment

A gentle practice you may begin today. No account is required. If you mark a day complete, that mark is stored privately on this device and nowhere else.

Open the Burning Bush Journal
  1. Day 1

    Attention

Pray without an agenda, and notice what draws your attention. Write down what you noticed and nothing more.

  2. Day 2

    Scripture

Sit with one short passage. Record the words, images, or questions that become salient, and what they invite in you.

  3. Day 3

    Encouragement

Ask whom you might strengthen or encourage today. Choose one low-risk, loving action, and take it.

  4. Day 4

    Pictures and patterns

Record an image, memory, phrase, or repeated theme exactly as it arrived, before assigning any meaning to it.

  5. Day 5

    Weighing

Take one impression you recorded and walk it through the eight-part framework on this page. Note what holds and what does not.

  6. Day 6

    Community

Invite one mature and trusted believer to help you weigh something you recorded. Listen more than you explain.

  7. Day 7

    Review

Look back across the week for fruit, correction, confirmation, and what you learned about your own tendencies.

For the waiting

When the room feels quiet

If you do not sense anything, you are not failing, and you are not further from God than someone who does.

Stay near

Scripture, prayer, worship, and journaling are not techniques for producing an experience. They are how a relationship is kept.

Stay patient

Attention is slow work. Silence is often formation rather than absence, and rest is part of it.

Stay useful

Serve someone. A great deal of guidance arrives while you are already doing the good in front of you.

Faithfulness is the measure, not sensation. You are free from the pressure to perform.

Responsibility

Healthy discernment protects people

The purpose of a word is never power. It is love, and love can be recognized by how it treats the person in front of you.

  • Preserve humility in wording, especially when speaking into someone else's life.
  • Give people freedom to weigh a word rather than pressuring them to accept it.
  • Never use a spiritual claim to control another person, bypass consent, demand money, demand loyalty, or override appropriate authority.
  • Keep medical, mental health, legal, financial, and safety decisions anchored in qualified professional care and objective evidence as well as prayer.
  • When a spiritual or perceptual experience becomes frightening, dangerous, or destabilizing, or urges harm to yourself or to others, seek immediate qualified support and emergency help as appropriate.
  • Keep the body, mind, relationships, sleep, grief, stress, and health in the discernment record, because the whole person matters.

This is the same whole-person approach the Burning Bush journal uses. Sleep, grief, pressure, joy, and health belong in the record, because they shape what you perceive and how you weigh it.

Questions

Common questions about hearing God

Does hearing God always sound like a voice?

No. For most people it is not an audible sound at all. It is more often a prompting, a picture, a phrase, a Scripture that becomes unusually alive, a burden to pray, or a quiet sense that will not leave. The word hearing describes attention, not volume.

How can I tell the difference between God, my own thoughts, and emotion?

Rarely by the sensation itself. You tell the difference by testing: whether it coheres with Scripture, whether it reflects the character of God, whether it converges with other moments you did not arrange, whether mature believers recognize it, whether the facts support it, and what fruit it bears over time.

What if I get it wrong?

You will sometimes be wrong, and that is part of learning. Hold impressions humbly, speak them as something you sense rather than a verdict, welcome correction, and record what happened so you can learn your own tendencies. Being correctable is a sign of maturity, not failure.

Does every Christian hear God the same way?

No. People receive differently. Some receive words and phrases, some receive pictures, some receive a settled inner knowing, and many receive through Scripture and wise counsel. Difference in form is not difference in worth.

Should I act immediately on an impression?

Usually not. Small acts of love and encouragement can be immediate. Anything consequential, costly, or involving another person deserves prayer, counsel, evidence, and time. Delay rarely harms a genuine word.

What role does Scripture play?

Scripture is the settled ground on which everything else is weighed. An impression may illuminate Scripture, and Scripture may examine an impression, but Scripture is never displaced by an impression.

What role does community play?

Community keeps discernment honest. Mature believers help weigh what was sensed, name what is unclear, and offer correction that a person cannot give themselves. Discernment practiced alone drifts.

Can someone grow in discernment?

Yes. Scripture describes discernment as trained by practice. Attention, prayer, journaling, service, feedback, correction, and review all sharpen recognition over years.

How do prophecy and words of knowledge fit into this?

They are gifts given to strengthen, encourage, and console. They are to be weighed rather than assumed, offered humbly rather than imposed, and held inside the same testing that governs every other impression.
