Forty Five Chapters in Five Movements
Nine chapters per movement, quietly honoring a forty fifth year. Each chapter runs approximately nine hundred to thirteen hundred words so the book can be read in a single sitting or one chapter at a time.
Part One
Preserved Breath
- 01
Before I Could Save Anyone
Life begins with absolute vulnerability. The cord, the silence, the waiting room of breath, and the people whose actions allowed a life to continue.
- 02
The Cord
The umbilical cord as nourishment, connection, danger, dependence, and paradox. The very structure that carried life also became the site of crisis.
- 03
Hands I Could Not Summon
No language with which to ask for help. Other people recognized the danger and acted. The earliest pattern of communal preservation.
- 04
My First Dependence
Dependence as a condition of embodied life. Every child begins through dependence. Every adult remains sustained through visible and invisible communities.
- 05
When Breath Became Voice
The movement from physical breath to speech, teaching, scientific communication, mentoring, leadership, writing, prayer, and prophetic expression.
- 06
The Body as Witness
The body carries a history conscious memory cannot retrieve. Medicine later gives language for the physiology of one's own beginning.
- 07
Beloved Grace
Sherry-Ann as a literary meditation on belovedness and grace. Identity precedes productivity, titles, and service.
- 08
Brown Ground
Ancestry, African American womanhood, embodiment, visibility, soil, cultivation, germination, and the grounded place where calling bears fruit.
- 09
A Life Received
Life arrived as gift. Stewardship begins with reception.
Part Two
The Heart and the Work
- 10
The Heart I Was Sent to Study
Becoming a cardiologist, and the resonance between a threatened first breath and a later devotion to circulation, oxygenation, and the human heart.
- 11
Cancer and the Vulnerable Heart
Cardio-oncology through human stories: helping people survive cancer while preserving cardiovascular health and long term flourishing.
- 12
The Person Beyond the Chart
The clinical encounter as a meeting among physiology, biography, fear, hope, family, systems, and spirit.
- 13
Questions That Became Research
The clinical questions that followed beyond patient encounters and eventually required datasets, hypotheses, teams, and sustained investigation.
- 14
The Pattern Beneath the Data
Thousands of records, hidden relationships, incomplete information, artificial intelligence, statistical discipline, and the humility of uncertainty.
- 15
Building What I Could See
Giving form to ideas through clinical programs, digital tools, companies, nonprofit structures, educational models, and intellectual property.
- 16
The Price of Vision
The financial, relational, physical, emotional, and spiritual cost of building, including carrying ideas before institutions or markets understand them.
- 17
Mentoring Beyond Myself
The Brown Virtual Lab, emerging scholars, publications, patience, multiplication, and the transition from giving answers to developing capacity.
- 18
Care That Travels
Nationwide licensure, virtual medicine, telehealth, asynchronous consultation, and care moving farther than one body can travel.
Part Three
The Unfinished Woman
- 19
Direct
Direct communication as a gift of clarity, decisiveness, efficiency, and courage.
- 20
The Sharp Edge of Urgency
When urgency compresses the emotional space available to other people. Accurate content can still require wiser timing, tone, and relational preparation.
- 21
Seeing Far, Missing Near
Recognizing distant patterns and systemic implications while occasionally missing a social cue, an interpersonal shift, or an immediate emotional need.
- 22
Naïveté and Holy Wonder
Openness preserves imagination, hope, faith, and generosity. It can also expose a person to manipulation, incomplete representations, and misplaced trust.
- 23
Trust Before Verification
Trusting words, promises, agreements, collaborators, or institutions before sufficient verification, and the movement toward discernment and stronger processes.
- 24
The Mistake in the Room
A communication mistake, a judgment mistake, an operational mistake, a relational mistake, and a decision made under pressure.
- 25
Repair
Apology, accountability, correction, restitution, changed conduct, boundaries, and the humility required to remain present after causing harm or confusion.
- 26
People Who Tell Me the Truth
Those who have challenged, translated, protected, corrected, or slowed the work, and the qualities that make truthful counsel trustworthy.
- 27
The Grace of Being Known
The loneliness that can surround visible competence. Being admired from a distance differs from being deeply known.
Part Four
Convergence
- 28
One River
A river flows from Eden and divides into four rivers. The governing image for a calling with several expressions. The river is the commission; the streams are the fields.
- 29
Physician Scientist
Medicine and research within one vocation: the patient raises the question, science studies it, evidence refines understanding, implementation carries the answer toward practice.
- 30
Innovator Entrepreneur
The movement from insight to usable form: a tool, system, method, platform, or experience that another person can actually use.
- 31
Teacher and Multiplier
Teaching as distributed breath. Knowledge enters another person and eventually travels somewhere you may never visit.
- 32
Writer and Storykeeper
Data identifies patterns across populations. Story restores name, voice, meaning, and lived texture.
- 33
Intercessor
Carrying people and situations before God in prayer: compassion, emotional weight, spiritual boundaries, and the surrender of outcomes.
- 34
Prophetic Formation
Discernment, spiritual impressions, dreams, symbolism, testing, scriptural grounding, humility, and accountable community.
- 35
Fifty States
The United States as a physical field of service. Licensure, travel, virtual work, public gatherings, and personal discovery converge geographically.
- 36
Water Along the Way
Water as the recurring image of life, reflection, movement, cleansing, continuity, and one source reaching distant ground.
Part Five
The Mountain
- 37
These Forty-Five Years
Caleb declared that the Lord had kept him alive through forty five years. A review of accumulated formation, sacrifice, correction, and unfinished hope.
- 38
A Different Spirit
Seeing possibilities that others cannot yet see: courage, isolation, unconventional strategy, faith, and the responsibility to test visionary conclusions carefully.
- 39
Strength for Going and Coming
Stamina, travel, health, aging, energy, rest, rhythm, physical limitation, and the stewardship of a body carrying a large assignment.
- 40
Name the Mountain
The mature field of calling stated in direct language: where cardiovascular care, cancer survivorship, discovery, artificial intelligence, enterprise, scholar development, spiritual discernment, and national service converge.
- 41
The Rope Team
Clinical collaborators, scientific colleagues, operational leaders, legal counsel, financial advisers, spiritual elders, friends, family, editors, assistants, safety personnel, hosts, and truth tellers.
- 42
Shared Burden
Mutual dependence. Your gifts help carry others, and their gifts help carry you. The body of Christ as lived reality rather than abstraction.
- 43
Inheritance
The people, institutions, discoveries, technologies, books, curricula, companies, programs, and spiritual fruit that continue serving afterward.
- 44
Rest in the Land
Joshua 14 concludes with the land receiving rest from war. Sabbath, financial order, sustainable leadership, succession, health, joy, friendship, home, water, and peace.
- 45
The Breath We Carry Together
Return to the delivery room. Other hands made room for a first breath. At forty five, every meaningful mountain remains communal.
